Broccoli

Of the commonly grown brassicas, broccoli is the most trouble free to grow. However, it is a heavy feeder requiring well balanced soil. To get really good results we highly recommend additional compost and organic fertilizer. Broccoli can be readily grown from seedlings and transplanted to the field 3-5 weeks later or sown direct. Although cooler weather suits this crop best it can successfully be grown all year round in our moderate climate. An added problem in hotter weather is the presence of white cabbage butterflies that can devastate less than optimally healthy plants. Bird or insect netting over the crop is an effective preventative measure against white butterflies.
